Feeling Off? These 9 Foods Might Be Why
Everyday foods and eating habits that may be affecting your mood and energy.
We've all had periods where we just don't feel like ourselves. Low energy, a short fuse, a heaviness that's hard to name. Sometimes life brings it on. Sometimes it creeps in without a clear reason.
What many people don't realize is that what you eat can have a direct impact on how you feel emotionally as well as physically. Many common foods drive inflammation in the body, and that inflammation can affect your brain, your mood, and your ability to manage everyday stress.
This is part one of a two-part series. Next week, I'll share the foods that work in your favor. This week, we’re focusing on the 9 foods consistently linked in research to poorer mood and mental well-being.
Alcohol — disrupts sleep, worsens anxiety, and negatively affects mood regulation. Blood sugar regulation issues worsens all mental health issues.
Ultra-processed foods — packaged snacks, fast food, and many ready-to-eat meals are associated with poorer mental-health outcomes.
Many “protein” bars are nothing more than candy bars and many of them are actually owned by candy makers like Mars and Hershey.
Added sugar & sugary drinks — can contribute to blood-sugar swings and inflammation. This is where real hidden extra calories are in the diets of Americans. People lose several pounds within a short time changing this habit to water from “energy” drinks and sodas.
Refined carbohydrates — white bread, pastries, crackers, and many refined cereals cause rapid glucose rises and crashes. Unless your bread is a high fiber type bread, bread is a big problem for people to balance blood sugar.
Trans fats & heavily processed fats — particularly partially hydrogenated oils; these are best avoided. These are hiding in just about everything you buy in a box, or plastic wrap at your quick market.
Excessive fried/fast foods — often combine refined carbohydrates, processed fats, excess calories, and additives. This is where the “bad” fats in your blood work come from in the diet.
Processed meats — bacon, sausage, hot dogs, and some deli meats; swapping out your products here to “nitrate free” helps.
Too much caffeine — especially later in the day; poor sleep can significantly affect mood. Anything that worsens sleep worsens your health. Sleep is where the body repairs itself.
Artificially sweetened foods and drinks- Aspartame, Splenda, etc- add sweetness without sugar’s calories or nutrients. It triggers sweet taste pathways but not the satiety signals from real food, so the brain may still seek energy.
The common thread running through every food on this list is inflammation. And while inflammation affects your whole body, it has a particularly significant impact on how your brain functions, including how you regulate mood, energy, and stress.
Cutting these out gradually, a couple at a time, is the most realistic way to reduce inflammation and start feeling a difference.
Inflammation is the common link to all chronic disease.
These 9 foods are a place to start. But your body, symptoms, and nutritional needs are unique. Let's identify your personal food triggers and create a realistic plan that works for you.
