Ozempic and Weight Loss
Expectations vs Results
I remember as a child meeting an adult from time to time who shared with me a story of how they had once been very lean and healthy from a vastly different body size than this testimony related. As a child I assumed they were lying. Now as an adult who has studied the body, food as medicine , and maintaining good health, my view of these testimonials has changed quite a bit. I have thought much about the latest controversy as I see it of yet another drug claiming to have the solution to many health problems packaged in a syringe for sale. With this latest campaign heading directly for children, I decided to look at it more.
THE HCG therapy( Human chorionic gonadotropin ) has been around for over 10 years in the form of a supplement along with a specialized diet. Lately, with the marketing of synthetic substitutes known as Ozempic and Semiglutide, it is being marketed everywhere as a cure for our massive obesity epidemic, including for children. I have many fairly lean friends using it to drop the stubborn few pounds. This troubles me as nutritionist for a number of reasons, mainly the lack of upfront discussion about side effects and long term problems from muscle loss taking the drug. Choosing whether or not to take a drug with such a large number of side effects, many of them permanent, should be carefully considered in advance, especially for children around risk vs benefit long term.
What is the difference between HCG and Ozempic and Semiglutide (Wegovy)?
Ozempic (Semaglutide):
Ozempic is primarily used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It helps to lower blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release and reducing glucagon production.
Ozempic belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It mimics the action of the hormone GLP-1, which stimulates insulin secretion and reduces appetite. Common side effects of Ozempic include gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. It can also increase the risk of pancreatitis, hypoglycemia, and thyroid tumors in some people. In addition to lowering blood sugar levels, Ozempic can lead to weight loss and has shown cardiovascular benefits in clinical trials.
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)
HCG is a hormone naturally produced by the placenta during pregnancy. It is used for various medical purposes, including fertility treatments and weight loss. HCG is believed to suppress appetite and promote fat loss. However, its effectiveness for weight loss is controversial and not supported by robust scientific evidence. HCG can be administered through injections or oral drops. Common side effects of HCG include headache, fatigue, irritability, and water retention. There are also concerns about more serious side effects, such as blood clots and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) when used for fertility treatments.
The FDA does not support use of this medication for many reasons, some of which relate to the corrupted relations between the FDA and the companies who pay them to approve patents on medications. This abuse of power wielded by the FDA along with widespread evidence of collusion by the FDA with drug manufacturers is not a secret. I call upon the release of the covid vaccine as a stark example of this abuse.
Ozempic and HCG are used for different purposes and work through different mechanisms. Ozempic is an FDA-approved medication for type 2 diabetes that can also aid in weight loss and has cardiovascular benefits. On the other hand, HCG is used for fertility treatments and has been promoted for weight loss, although its effectiveness for weight loss is not well-supported by scientific evidence.
There exist warehouses of data proving the dramatic abysmal failure of drugs patented to reverse or prevent any of the health conditions they claim to manage control and reverse.
Before starting any medication or treatment, it's essential to consult with a healthcare provider to discuss the potential benefits, risks, and appropriate use of the medication.
