The Calm and Rebuild Protocol
Simple ways to support your nervous system, manage stress, and create space for recovery.
I have been in vacation mode this week.
This time off was desperately needed for my nervous system. The stress of going thru the normal cycle of a great loss had built up again.
Here are some benefits you gain from a week’s break away:
Cortisol Levels Drop
When you step away from deadlines, constant notifications, and mental load:
The stress response quiets
Cortisol output lowers
Adrenaline spikes reduce
Within a few days, the body often shifts from sympathetic dominance (fight-or-flight) toward parasympathetic activity (rest-and-digest).
You may notice that your breathing becomes more relaxed, thoughts calm down, and tension head and jaw aches improve.
The Brain Relaxes
Chronic stress keeps the amygdala on alert. With a sustained reset of just a few days, emotional reactivity improves. This is why perspective often returns around day 3–4 of vacation.
Sleep Improves
In those same 3-4 days, sleep is easier to achieve and faster. REM cycles stabilize, and nervous system can begin to repair.
Better sleep = better nervous system repair.
Heart Rate Variability Improves
HRV, or heart rate variability is a marker of nervous system flexibility. with lower stress this improves. Movement becomes rhythmic with gentle walks, swims or other outdoor activities on vacation. In addition, meals can normalize which helps the heart as much as it helps digestion. The two go hand in hand “rest/digest”, very good for HRV.
Rest can:
Improve gut function
Lower blood sugar variability
Reduce systemic inflammation
Stress directly affects insulin sensitivity.
A full week allows the body to:
Experience sustained safety
Relearn what calm feels like
Build capacity for future stress
Here are my favorites to gradually improve your resilience and recover from stress:
Breath: The Fastest Reset Button
The vagus nerve is your shortcut.
Try this:
Inhale 4 seconds
Exhale 6–8 seconds
Repeat 2–5 minutes
Longer exhales signal safety to the brain.

Blood Sugar Stability = Nervous System Stability
Blood sugar spikes keep the body in stress mode. To slowly but adequately repair the blood sugar/stress issue, do this-
Reset basics:
Protein within 30–60 minutes of waking
Pair carbs with fat/protein
Avoid caffeine on an empty stomach
Eat regularly (don’t “white-knuckle” through stress fasting)
Stable glucose = fewer cortisol surges and better mental health overall.
Nervous System Repair Nutrients
My Top Rest and RESET bedtime supplement- Magnesium glycinate
Magnesium glycinate is one of the most absorbable and gentle forms of magnesium. It’s magnesium bound to glycine (an amino acid), which makes it calming and easy on digestion.
Here’s what it does:
Calms the Nervous System
Supports GABA activity (your calming neurotransmitter)
Reduces muscle tension
Helps with “wired but tired” feelings
May ease anxiety and stress reactivity
Relaxes Muscles
Helps with cramps and spasms
Useful for tight shoulders/jaw
Can reduce restless legs
Supports post-workout recovery
Improves Sleep
Helps you fall asleep faster
May increase deep sleep
Reduces nighttime awakenings related to stress
Unlike magnesium citrate, it’s less likely to cause loose stools.Great for people in chronic sympathetic (fight-or-flight) mode.
Supports Blood Sugar + Heart Health
Magnesium plays a role in:
Insulin sensitivity
Blood pressure regulation
Heart rhythm stability
For metabolic health, magnesium is foundational.
Bone Health
Required for proper calcium metabolism
Helps activate vitamin D
Contributes to bone mineral density
Enzymes utilize magnesium for-
Energy production (ATP)
DNA repair
Detox pathways
Hormone balance
Add these too:
Omega-3 fatty acids
B vitamins
Salt + minerals—the body burns thru minerals when you’re stressed out all the time. A pinch of good sea salt in your water glass will help.
