Toss the Toxins: A Simple Pantry Detox

Pantry shelves stocked withorganic packaged foods, grains, canned goods, coffee and supplements.

Before You Buy Another Supplement, Detox Your Pantry

One of the most overlooked ways to improve your health is to simply learn to swap out toxic food items for clean substitutes. For people living with one or more autoimmune diagnoses, or any kind of overactive immune response, what you eat is either feeding the inflammation or fighting it.

It’s often said, and mostly ignored, “You cannot out-supplement a poor diet.” It’s true no matter how many vitamins you’re taking. Symptoms of an over-processed, under-nourished diet can look like joint pain, skin issues, brain fog, chronic fatigue, or digestive problems, and they are more connected to what’s in your pantry than most people realize.

Biggest Pantry Offenders to Dump

  • Ultra-processed foods — cookies, crackers, cereals, snack bars, chips, pastries and similar products loaded with refined flour, added sugar, unhealthy oils, and additives. These are not food. They are food-shaped products that are cheap to make and impossible to stop eating.

  • Seed-oil-heavy foods — products where soybean, corn, cottonseed, safflower or other refined oils are major ingredients. Here is what most people do not know: these oils come from GMO crops and are extracted under high heat, which causes the oil to oxidize and go rancid before it ever hits the shelf. To mask that, manufacturers treat them with chemical deodorizers and bleaching agents. Instead of a neutral cooking oil, you are getting an industrially processed product your body does not recognize as food. If the oil was not cold-pressed, it does not belong in your kitchen or your body.

  • Sugary sauces & condiments — BBQ sauce, ketchup, teriyaki, sweet dressings and any mayo or dip not made from avocado oil or from scratch. Read the labels. Sugar hides in places you would never expect.

  • Sugary drinks & drink mixes — soda, sweet tea, powdered drinks and sweetened beverages. This is one of the easiest and highest-impact swaps on this list. Most people lose weight quickly just by cutting these out and replacing them with water.

  • Highly processed “health” foods — diet snacks, meal replacements, and protein bars with long ingredient lists. Most protein bars are candy bars in disguise. The word "health" on the label means nothing without reading what is actually in it.

  • Fast (fat) food — this single elimination will quickly change how you look and feel. Fast food companies use the cheapest ingredients with little or no nutrient value and a high toxic load. These foods are not designed to fuel your body and actually make your fat cells expand.

  • Margarine and other plane degreasers — anything made from a synthetic oil was not designed to feed you. Created to lubricate engines, these fake fats actually clog the body with toxins. Eliminate all fake butters, spreads, and shortening in any form.

  • Anything with a mile-long ingredient list — if you wouldn't recognize most of the ingredients, leave it at the store. The simpler the ingredient list, the closer to real food.

What you don’t put in your body matters.

Clear the offenders and make room for real food. Stay tuned next week for the healthier pantry swaps that will transform your kitchen and your health. In the meantime, remember this simple rule:

Fewer packages. Fewer ingredients. More REAL food.

Removing inflammatory foods can shift your health journey significantly. But for many of my clients, simple pantry swaps are just one piece of a bigger nutritional picture. If you have been doing everything "right" and still not feeling better, that is worth a conversation.
