Dry January
What’s so great about doing a Dry January?
The answers can be really varied from person to person, but here are the basics:
First the physical:
Taking a break from alcohol reduces liver fat, inflammation, and the risk of liver disease. Regular drinking of alcohol disrupts REM sleep; going dry leads to more restorative rest. Less alcohol improves your body's hydration and energy levels.
Weight Management- Cutting out alcohol reduces empty calorie intake and cravings.
Lower Blood Pressure and Cholesterol- Alcohol can increase blood pressure; abstaining improves cardiovascular health.
Improved Skin- Alcohol dehydrates skin; taking a break often results in a clearer complexion.
Dry January for your Mental Health:
Alcohol can increase anxiety or depression; taking a break helps stabilize emotions.
Enhanced Focus and Productivity- Clearer thinking and fewer "foggy" days improve work or personal activities. Not having hangovers increases productivity and energy.
Social Benefits:
Reducing alcohol consumption saves money. Let’s face it, who couldn’t benefit from saving money right now?
When you remove the alcohol, you remain more present and alert in conversations, and have less chance of a social blunder.
It’s an opportunity to explore alcohol-free socializing and activities.
At the end of the month, what did you miss?
Dry January helps you evaluate the role alcohol plays in your life. Many participants drink less even after the challenge. Quitting alcohol seems to be more popular than ever with certain age groups, namely Gen Z and Milennials.
