Glutathione-- the Master Antioxidant
Did you know that what you eat and drink shows up on your face?
Not to alarm you, it means that at any point that, changing your diet and drinking more water can influence your face in a short time. Last week, we talked about collagen and beauty and skin health, and I promised to talk about Glutathione.
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant found in every cell of the body, playing a key role in protecting cells from oxidative stress and maintaining overall health. It consists of three amino acids: glutamine, cysteine, and glycine. Here are some important functions of glutathione:
Neutralizes free radicals, which can cause cell damage and contribute to aging, cancer, and various diseases.
Helps the liver detoxify substances, including heavy metals, pollutants, and metabolic byproducts.
Supports immune function by regulating the immune response, aiding in the proliferation of white blood cells, and enhancing the effectiveness of vitamins C and E.
Plays a role in repairing damaged proteins and DNA, keeping cells functioning properly.
Involved in mitochondrial function, helping the body produce energy at the cellular level.
How does all that affect your appearance?
Glutathione is widely used for skin lightening and brightening. It helps reduce melanin production, the pigment responsible for dark spots, uneven skin tone, and hyperpigmentation.
Glutathione fights oxidative stress, which is a key contributor to aging. By neutralizing free radicals, it helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging like sagging skin.
It also helps maintain the skin's elasticity and firmness by supporting collagen production.
Its detoxifying properties can benefit acne-prone skin, by helping to remove toxins from the body and reducing inflammation.
Glutathione promotes overall skin health by improving cell regeneration, resulting in smoother and softer skin.
Glutathione provides some protection against UV damage by reducing oxidative stress from sun exposure.
The body produces glutathione, but levels can decrease due to aging, poor diet, stress, and exposure to toxins.
What food supports glutathione production?
Eggs, Chicken, Salmon, Grass-fed beef, Dairy products (especially unprocessed and pasture-raised sources)
Spinach, swiss chard, and collard greens- High in glutathione itself and supports production.
Avocados are naturally high in glutathione and also contain healthy fats that support the body's ability to absorb antioxidants.
Asparagus is one of the richest food sources of glutathione and is packed with additional antioxidants.
