Dropping Acid
Fixing Heartburn and Reflux
About 20% -25% of Americans have issues with acid reflux . These symptoms show up as heartburn, coughing, a lump in the throat, chest pain, backwashing of food, trouble swallowing, increase in symptoms of asthma, or laryngitis.
More symptoms of acid reflux or heartburn can nclude a hoarse voice, bad breath, recurring hiccups, or bloating and feeling sick.
Correcting this problem is fairly easy with small consistent adjustments to diet and lifestyle.
When you see a Doctor for Acid reflux they will often put you on a proton pump inhibitor or acid blocking medication. These can help calm things down, but in the long run only serve to worsen the root cause of your acid reflux issues.
Here are my go-to tips to begin to reverse the reason you are having these issues:
Cut out eating 3 hours before going to bed. This helps your digestion finish the processing in the stomach for restful sleep.
Drink eight or more 8 oz glasses of water every day. When you are hydrated, the throat and saliva is lubricated helping things move out of the stomach easier.
Start your morning with warm water and lemon. Lemon although acidic in appearance, acts as a base to neutralize acid in the body.
If you have trouble with heartburn, don’t grab that antacid! A better choice is to mix a teaspoon in a half a glass of water and drink that. The baking soda calms the stomach and neutralizes acids.
Our ancestors used to ferment foods and pair them with foods that are hard to digest. For example, hot dogs and sauerkraut paired together helps the body break down the meats. Start adding a little fermented foods or sodas into your diet.
Here is a recipe to make your own Beet Kvass!

Filtered water
In a wide 2 quart mason jar, add salt, whey, garlic and beets. Fill to shoulder with water. Let sit for 2 days to ferment. Drink a 1/4 cup a day and gradually work up to a larger serving.
Beet Kvass is gentle introduction to ferments for your gut.
