Killing Germs Without Wrecking Your Gut

Every time I went to the doctor in my 20s, I was sick with a virus or cold and wanted them to give me an antibiotic. This habit of taking antibiotics every time I sneezed damaged my immune system and took time to repair.

Antibiotic Risk

  1. Microbes

    • Even a short course can wipe out beneficial bacteria along with the harmful ones.

    Harmful Bacteria

    • With “good” bacteria suppressed, organisms can overgrow, causing diarrhea and serious infections.

    Metabolism

    • Gut microbes help digest fiber, produce vitamins and generate short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate, which fuel colon cells.

    Immune System

    • Disruption can lead to immune dysregulation, increasing risks for allergies, asthma, and autoimmune conditions.

    Gut-Brain Axis

    • Antibiotic-induced shifts in gut microbes can influence neurotransmitters linked to anxiety, brain fog, or low energy.

Oregano for Healing

  1. Antimicrobial Action

    • Oregano has strong antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties.

    Anti-Inflammatory

    • Compounds like thymol and rosmarinic acid help calm inflammation, which supports healing in tissues, joints, and the gut.

    Antioxidant Protection

    • Oregano is rich in polyphenols that neutralize free radicals, protecting cells and aiding recovery from oxidative stress.

    Digestive Health

    • Oregano tea or capsules may ease bloating, indigestion, and microbial imbalance in the gut, helping restore a healthy microbiome.

    Respiratory Support

    • Oregano oil is traditionally used to ease coughs, colds, and sinus infections.

A word about toxicity:

I don’t care how you take oregano, only take it for up to two weeks at a time! The potency of oregano can build up in your body and be too strong to sustain, making it harmful. Just like anything else, we use caution. Talk to me about this if you have a question.
