Disordered Eating
Normalizing Recovery in a Sick Culture
Do you feel like yourself anymore?
Lately I have been eating more than a normal amount of ice cream. I attribute this to the lack of hunger I have felt for some time after the death of my adult daughter. For some reason, the ice cream is filling a void for me.
If you know me, then you are aware of my years of disordered eating. To be able to be honest about the ice cream is one way I keep myself in check with the habit.
Disordered Eating: A Path to Healing
Disordered eating is more common than we think.
At its core, disordered eating isn’t just about food. It’s about self-worth, stress, control, and coping. The path to healing isn’t another diet—it’s rebuilding trust with your body and reshaping your relationship with food.
Here is what disordered eating looks like:
Chronic dieting
Obsessive calorie counting
Skipping meals regularly
Binge eating followed by guilt
Feeling out of control around food
Labeling foods as “good” or “bad”
Emotional eating
93% of Americans are chronically sick with metabolic poor health. This means most of our society has some issues with disordered eating. The path out of these unhealthy habits can vary depending on the person.
Here are the basics:
Notice patterns without judgment. Awareness is the first step.
Seek support. Therapists trained in disordered eating can help. Nutritionists can partner with your therapist to give a wrap around approach to healing which is proven to increase long-term recovery. This is an area I am an expert in.
Practice intuitive eating. Listen to hunger, fullness, and satisfaction.
Rethink body image. Your body deserves respect and care at every size.
Redefine health. True wellness includes joy, flexibility, and compassion.
