Party Hacks
Happy Thanksgiving!
This time of year always gets busy.
While we have to choose where to let some habits slip to fit in the chaos of family time, planning to hang on to some habits will lessen the panic of weight gain.
Many people, including myself struggle with loss around this time. In addition, social pressures to fit into plans that other people enjoy can wreak havoc on mental health.
For many years post recovery from an eating disorder, I suffered a relapse with bulimia on Thanksgiving. I attribute this to pressures of trying to pleasing everyone. Speaking about this, I hope to encourage you with whatever struggles you battle, to find ways to keep your self care sacred throughout this season.
When deciding to attend a party, here a couple of my hacks to help you set up for success:
Have a small, balanced snack like a handful of nuts, yogurt, or a piece of fruit before heading to the party. This reduces the likelihood of overeating.
Drink water beforehand to avoid confusing thirst with hunger.
At the party:
Before filling your plate, look at all the options. Decide on the healthier choices and prioritize those. Eat your vegetables first. Pile your plate with at least 50% veggies.
Eat your Protein before your carbs - Look for lean protein options and avoid fried or heavily sauced meats. When you eat protein before rolls, mashed potatoes or mac and cheese, your protein burns slower, staving off the desire to binge. Proteins and healthy fats tell our brain we feel satisfied. Use smaller plates if available and avoid piling food.
What will you be drinking?
Bring your own beverages. Have a few extra for sharing.
Focus on the People, Not Just the Food: Engage in conversations and activities to make the event about socializing rather than eating.
Plan an exit time:
Whether or not family and friends can understand and give approval to your exit time, protecting your sobriety or other “SELF-CARE” is THE most important thing in your life. I have found after years of trial and error, that there comes at parties a “turn-time” when alcohol effects are at a peak, and people that don’t get along start to bicker. Only you can decide that time for yourself and it can change as you change and grow.
