Some Helpful Tips

It’s that time of year again!

Light is ending earlier, and the temperature drops. During the day around this time of year, I often have to have a change of clothes with me for the feeling of summer at noon with the temperature.

Fall weather changes can definitely stir up seasonal allergies — even though many people think allergy season ends with summer.

Ragweed Pollen:

  • The biggest fall allergen in most regions.

  • Ragweed releases pollen from late August through November.

  • Wind spreads the pollen for miles — even if no ragweed grows nearby.

    Mold Spores:

    • Fallen leaves, damp soil, and decaying plants create a perfect environment for mold growth.

    • Mold spores get into the air when leaves are raked or when humidity rises after rain.

    Dust Mites:

    • As temperatures drop and heaters come on, dust that settled during summer gets stirred up.

    • Heating systems also dry the air, irritating sinuses and making symptoms worse.

    Barometric Pressure & Temperature Swings:

    • Rapid shifts in weather can cause nasal membranes to swell and mimic allergy symptoms.

    • People with chronic sinus issues often feel these changes more intensely.

Here are some ideas for managing the season:

Keep windows closed on high-pollen or windy days.

Rinse nasal passages with saline to clear pollen and mold spores.

Change HVAC filters and use a HEPA air purifier indoors.

Shower and change clothes after being outdoors.

  1. Support the immune system with anti-inflammatory foods:

    • Vitamin C (citrus, bell peppers)

    • Quercetin (apples, onions)

    • Omega-3 fats (salmon, flaxseed)

    • Local honey (may help mild pollen sensitivity over time)

  2. Hydrate and humidify — moisture helps soothe inflamed nasal tissues.
