Sun, Summer and Your Skin (Part 2)

Avoid These to Give You Sun Resilience

Last week, I gave you eating tips to support skin health in the sun of summer.

There exist a number of foods that increase your photo-sensitivity. We have all taken a medication at one time or another that made us more sensitive to sun exposure.

Certain foods and franken-foods can do that too.

⚠️ Foods That Can Increase Sun Sensitivity

1. Citrus Fruits (Especially Lime, Lemon, Grapefruit)

  • Contain psoralens and furanocoumarins, which can cause phytophotodermatitis (a skin reaction triggered by UV light).

  • Commonly seen in “lime burn” after margaritas or citrus juices + sun.

    2. Celery, Parsley, Fennel, and Dill

    • Also high in psoralens; handling or consuming in large amounts can increase UV sensitivity.

    3. Alcohol (esp. White Wine and Beer)

    • Dilates blood vessels and can dehydrate the skin.

    • Some studies show alcohol consumption increases the risk of sunburn and skin cancer.

    4. Artificial Sweeteners and Diet Sodas

    • Some individuals report photoallergic reactions to artificial ingredients like aspartame, though rare.

    5. Processed or Fried Foods

  • High in omega-6 fatty acids and trans fats, which can increase inflammation and reduce the skin’s ability to recover from UV damage.

  • Canola and other seed oils INCREASE photosensitivity.

    6. High-Sugar Foods

  • Sugar promotes glycation, a process that damages collagen and weakens your skin’s structure—making it more vulnerable to UV rays.

    🧴 Medications & Supplements

These increase sun sensitivity- best taken after sun:

    1. Tetracycline antibiotics

    2. NSAIDs (ibuprofen)

    3. Retinoids (Vitamin A derivatives)

    4. Certain diuretics and antidepressants

    5. St John’s Wort

Contrary to mass propaganda by BIG PHARMA and those selling sunscreens, the sun is GOOD FOR YOU. The sun is also your BEST source of VItaminD.

Between 40-60% of the world population is Vitamin D deficient. This affects immunity and ability to beat disease.
