Self Talk and the Scale

This little hack really works for me both for weight loss and gain. I have played with this concept for years. The messages coming from our head to our cells can dictate the choices we make and the way our body responds to what we eat.

Your thoughts play a surprisingly big role in weight loss—sometimes even more than diet and exercise alone. Here’s how:

Stress & Cortisol

  • Negative or anxious thinking keeps your body in a stress response.

  • High stress raises cortisol, which can increase cravings for junk and encourage fat storage around the belly.

Self-Belief & Consistency

  • If you believe “I always fail at diets,” you’re more likely to sabotage yourself.

  • A mindset of progress, not perfection helps people stay consistent long term.

Emotional Eating

  • Thoughts like “I deserve a treat, I had a hard day” can lead to overeating.

  • Building awareness of these thought patterns helps you pause and choose nourishing foods instead.

Mind-Body Connection

  • Studies show people who eat with positive expectation (thinking “this food will nourish me”) digest and metabolize food better than those who eat with guilt or stress.

    Visualization & Motivation

  • Imagining yourself strong, healthy, and energized can motivate daily actions.

Reframing “I have to work out” to “I get to move my body” makes the process feel less like punishment and more like self-care.

Here are a few mantras for you:

“I eat to fuel my body, not to punish or comfort it.”
→ Keeps choices nourishing instead of emotional.

“One slip doesn’t ruin my progress.”
→ Helps stop the all-or-nothing spiral (“I blew it, so I’ll binge”).

“I enjoy food slowly, so I need less to feel satisfied.”
    → Encourages mindful eating.

“My body deserves movement, not punishment.”
    → Reframes exercise from guilt → self-care.

“Small daily choices compound into big changes.”
→ Builds consistency instead of chasing extremes.

“I focus on how I feel, not just how I look.”
→ Anchors weight loss to energy, mood, sleep, confidence.

“Healthy foods are an investment in my future self.”
    → Strengthens long-term motivation.

The best mantras are your own.

We spend more time and energy on products for our outer home, than we do taking time to care for the one house we should care for most: our one and only body. We can’t trade in the body we have.

Whether or not you feel shortchanged with the body you came into living with, the choice is yours to shift that and make it the best home you have for your lifetime.

Next week, I will talk about the limbic system and how to work with yours to feel your best everyday.
